Spa is first and foremost a celebrated mineral spring, with a reputation dating back to the Roman Empire. For centuries it has been called miracle water due to its therapeutic properties. Famous names have travelled from all over Europe to be treated there: Casanova, Russian tsar Peter the Great, Victor Hugo and of course the Belgian queen Marie-Henriette, who went on to give her name to a spring, and is the source of the name of “Spa Reine” water.
